Body composition is used to describe the percentages of body fat, muscle mass, bone, tissue, and water in human body. In simple words, it is essentially dissecting exactly what you’re made up of.
If your aim is to lose weight or want to see how healthy you are, it’s probably one of these two things which is done: stepping on a weighing scale or calculate your BMI. But the truth is, a regular weighing scale cannot tell you anything about how healthy you are. All it does is compare how heavy you are to a standard that doesn’t even fit your individual goals.
Healthier body composition is less fat and more muscle mass. Too much body fat can lead to risks like cancer, diabetes, heart disease, and other health problems.
ACE Body Fat Percent Norms for Men and Women which are medically accepted standard ranges, as determined by the American Council on Exercise (ACE) are
Women Men
Essential 10 to13% 2% to 5%
Fat
Athletes 14 to 20% 6 to13%
Fitness 21 to 24% 14 to 17%
Acceptable 25 to 31% 18 to 24%
Obese over 32% over 25%
Factors Affecting Body Composition
Age: People lose muscle mass as they age. If they don't maintain it with sufficient weight training. This results in a slower metabolism.
Genes: These play a role in whether you are naturally lean or have a tendency to retain fat, including where you store it.
Hormones: These can influence water retention and body composition.
Gender: Women have more body fat than men as nature's way of preparing for pregnancy and nursing.

It is highly recommended to conduct a body composition analysis at the start of any weight loss, weight gain, or targeted training program, as well as to monitor progress, rather than just relying on the numbers on scale and BMI.
